SXSW Day 4: Dent May // Carpark Records Showcase

We caught Dent May as he performed at the Carpark Records Sweet 16 Showcase during SXSW!

Dent May, Los Angeles, is a psychedelic lo-fi hippie making the best kind of feel good jams. Signed to Paw Tracks Label, Animal Collective, since 2009 May has given us 3 studio albums and countless good vibes.

SXSW 2015 is jam packed with fun and funky artists like May. However, if I may have a bias here, his eccentric demeanor and dynamite dance moves have landed his performances number one on my list so far. (So good in fact, we’ve gone out of our way to see him twice. There may or may not be a third show in the works, too.)

Watching his unlikely-looking bandmates set up their instruments, including a violin, was almost humorous. I distinctly remember the drummer wearing a Michael Jackson t-shirt.

May kicked off the set with Eastover Wives, a cool and easy going tune satirically about married women in May’s hometown of Eastover in Jackson, Mississippi.

After that, May followed up with Fun, Corner Piece, Do things, Picture on a Screen and Home Groan. All tailored in psychedelic experience while each song brought its own presence to the night.

To wrap up the night we heard Do I Cross Your Mind? and Best Friend. Best Friend is one of my favorite Dent May songs. It’s catchy riffs and romantic lyrics just make you wanna dance! The finale was truly the cherry on top with his single, Born Too Late. If you haven’t heard this track, be ready to have a song stuck in your head for life!

When his bandmates were asked when a new album was to be expected, the drummer kindly said, “Dent is working on it now!”

So everyone get excited, get groovy and be on the look out for more funky tracks.
